Spice of Life - ecoprint and plant dyed silk scarf
This lustrous crepe de chine silk scarf has been dyed and ecoprinted in layers of soft turquoise and light blues and grays, olive greens, pinks and pretty spatterings of paprika red (madder). Ecoprinted leaves are sumac, birch and gingko, and botanically dyed with black tea, madder and indigo.
Crepe de chine has a softly textured surface which gently catches the light. There is a substantial weight to this silk but it drapes gracefully and luxuriously. The lustre of this silk reminds me of the gentle glow of the wax bloom on grapes and plums.
The vesica piscis is a sacred geometric shape which is created when the edges of two circles intersect through their centres. The name vesica piscis literally means a bladder (vessel) of a fish, and is a symbol which has been with humanity for millennia, connected to sacred openings, portals, women's bodies, eyes and vision. It is one of my most beloved shapes and I use clamped wooden vesica piscis shapes as a resist when I dye my cloth - this technique is called itajime, or clamped block resist.
